Versus organizer guide
Versus is an organizer-operated system for running Swiss, best-of-one tournaments and optionally contributing completed event results to a league. Player log-in and public registration are not part of the current release.
Quick workflow
Create player accounts (optional) → Create tournament → Add participants
→ Link participants to player accounts (for league points) → Start tournament
→ Generate pairings → Record results → Next round → Finish tournament
→ Attach completed tournament to league → Rebuild league points
1. Maintain the player directory
Open Players from the main navigation to create reusable player accounts.
- Select Add player, enter the player's name, and save it.
- Use Edit to correct a name or Delete to remove an account.
- A player account is optional for running a tournament. It is required for that participant's results to receive league points later.
Player accounts are reusable identities. Tournament participants are event-specific records, so a later player-name change does not rewrite historical event participant names.
2. Create a tournament
Open Tournaments and select Create tournament.
Enter:
- Tournament name — the organizer-facing event name.
- Maximum players — capacity for registration.
- Format — only Swiss is currently supported.
- Tiebreak policy — choose Bushiroad default for match points, OMW, head-to-head, then organizer resolution. Choose Extended Swiss only when you announce OOMW to all players before play; it adds OOMW after OMW.
- Tournament date and an optional description.
The chosen tiebreak policy is locked when the tournament starts and cannot be changed afterward. The staging Swiss workflow requires at least 5 actual participants before an event can start. Capacity alone does not satisfy this requirement.
3. Register participants
Open the tournament and select Manage participants.
-
Enter names into the large Participant names text box, with one name per line. Do not separate names with commas.
Akira Tanaka Maya Chen Jordan Reyes Sam Patel Noor WilliamsThe example creates five participant records: Akira Tanaka, Maya Chen, Jordan Reyes, Sam Patel, and Noor Williams.
-
Blank lines are best avoided. Enter the display name you want to appear on pairings and standings.
-
Saving replaces the entire current registration list with the text box contents. To add one player, reopen the dialog, retain the existing lines, add the new line, then save. To remove a player or fix a spelling error, edit or remove that line and save.
-
The tournament screen shows the current count and the minimum of five participants required to start.
Link a participant to a registered player
A tournament participant and a registered player are related but different:
| Item | What it is | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Participant | The event-specific name entered in the text box | Pairings, match results, and tournament standings |
| Player | A reusable account in the Players directory | League points across multiple tournaments |
After saving the participant list, use the Link user button on the participant's row:
- Select Link user beside the participant.
- Choose the matching registered player from User account.
- Select Link user to save the connection.
The row then shows the account name rather than “Not linked,” and the button becomes Change user if a correction is needed. The participant's event display name is kept as entered; linking does not rename it.
Guest participants may play normally without a link. However, league rebuilding awards points only to participants linked to a registered player, so link eligible competitors before the tournament is finished. If a participant is not in the Players directory yet, first create them under Players, return to the tournament, and then use Link user.
4. Start the tournament
When registration is ready, select Start tournament from the tournament overview.
Versus locks the event's Swiss policy using the actual participant count, creates starting standings, and moves the event into pairing setup. The default Swiss round count is:
| Players | Rounds |
|---|---|
| 5–8 | 3 |
| 9–16 | 4 |
| 17–32 | 5 |
| 33–64 | 6 |
| 65–128 | 7 |
| 129–256 | 8 |
| 257–512 | 9 |
| 513–1,024 | 10 |
Two to four players are outside the supported staging profile; use round robin outside Versus for those small fields.
5. Run each Swiss round
Select Open round management from the tournament overview.
- Select Generate pairings. Round 1 is randomly paired; later rounds use standings and prior opponents to keep players near their score group and avoid rematches where possible.
- Review the displayed tables. With an odd player count, one player receives an automatic BYE. A BYE is not a scoreable table.
- Select Finalize pairings to open the round for result entry.
- Select Record score for each non-BYE table. Enter non-negative scores and save. A saved score can be corrected while the round is active.
- Review the standings, including event points, win/draw/loss, and the tiebreak values announced in the event policy.
- Select Next round to finalize the current results and prepare the next round. Review the confirmation, especially any drawn tables, before proceeding.
Repeat until the announced round count is reached. Do not start a next round before all intended results have been entered and reviewed.
Result and pairing notes
- A BYE is displayed as Auto BYE and is assigned as a win under the current staging policy.
- For later rounds, the preferred BYE recipient is the lowest-ranked eligible player who has not previously had a BYE.
- Standings use the locked event-point policy, then OMW and the announced tiebreak sequence. OOMW appears only when it was explicitly included in the event policy. The organizer should resolve any remaining final ties according to that policy.
- The current initial profile is best-of-one; elimination formats are not supported.
6. Finish the tournament
During the final active round, select Finish tournament rather than Next round.
Confirm the action after reviewing all scores. Finishing records the event as complete and exposes the final standings for league use. Treat this as the final organizer checkpoint: the current staging release does not provide an event-reopen workflow.
7. Create and manage a league
Open Leagues and select Create league.
Give the season a name, optional start/end dates, and a description. Each league has scoring rules for wins, draws, and losses; they are visible in the league workspace and can be edited there.
Within a league you can:
- Attach tournament — add an existing tournament to the season.
- Remove — detach a tournament from the season.
- Edit league — update its name, description, and scoring rules.
- Rebuild league points — recalculate standings from the league's finished attached tournaments using the current rules.
Only results for participants linked to a player account contribute to league standings. Rebuild points after attaching or removing tournaments, changing scoring rules, or correcting event results before final publication.
Example: getting an event into a league
- Create player accounts for Maya Chen and Jordan Reyes in Players.
- Add
Maya Chen,Jordan Reyes, and other competitors as separate lines in the tournament participant text box. - Link Maya's and Jordan's participant rows to their matching player accounts.
- Run and finish the tournament.
- Attach the finished tournament to the league and select Rebuild league points.
Maya and Jordan can appear in the league leaderboard. An unlinked guest participant can still place in the tournament standings, but is excluded from the league leaderboard.
Organizer checklist
Before play:
- Confirm the event is Swiss and has at least five registered participants.
- Confirm names are correct and link eligible participants to player accounts.
- Announce the format, round count, scoring, BYE treatment, tiebreakers, and any time-limit policy to players.
Each round:
- Generate and inspect pairings.
- Confirm the BYE recipient when the field is odd.
- Record every non-BYE table result.
- Check standings before advancing.
After the event:
- Finish the tournament only after final-score review.
- Attach it to the relevant league.
- Rebuild league points and verify the leaderboard.
Current scope and cautions
- Versus currently supports organizer-managed Swiss best-of-one events only.
- There is no authentication, public player portal, check-in, timer, or public results page.
- League points are based on linked player accounts, not unlinked guest participant names.
- For Bushiroad-compatible events, the event's announced policy takes precedence where permitted. Make the policy visible to participants before pairings begin and retain it with the event records.
